Dj Idea
Owner and operator of Idea studios
DJ Idea is a West Coast music producer, software developer, recording studio owner, and workshop instructor known for preserving and modernizing the Bay Area mob and West Coast G-funk sound for the next generation of producers.
Born and raised in Hawaii, DJ Idea’s passion for music began as a child after hearing Warren G’s “Regulators” on cassette. Fascinated by bass, drums, and sound textures at an early age, he became obsessed with how music felt physically through speakers. His early exposure to DJ culture, turntablism, and sound systems laid the foundation for his deep understanding of rhythm, groove, and bounce
After moving to Sunnyvale, California in his early teens, DJ Idea discovered digital music production through early versions of FL Studio, DJ equipment, and MIDI controllers. What started as recording friends after school quickly evolved into full beat production, engineering, and DJ performance. By high school, he was already producing, recording vocals, and learning multiple roles inside the studio — producer, engineer, and DJ
His true musical identity took shape when he was introduced to the Bay Area mob sound through artists like JT The Bigga Figga, AWOL Records, Mac Dre, C-BO, Messy Marv, and Sean T. Deeply inspired by the simplicity, bounce, heavy bass, and hypnotic chord progressions of 90s and early-2000s Bay Area music, DJ Idea spent years studying the culture, production styles, and regional differences across cities like San Francisco, Vallejo, Richmond, East Palo Alto, and Oakland
By the mid-2010s, DJ Idea began selling beats online through YouTube and BeatStars, fully committing to the West Coast sound instead of chasing mainstream trends. After several years of consistent work, his BeatStars career exploded — eventually surpassing 2 million Beatstars Streams, earning multiple plaques, and establishing him as one of the leading West Coast internet producers
His career reached a major turning point after connecting with Cardo Got Wings, who became a mentor and opened doors to major studio environments and industry knowledge. Through that connection, DJ Idea landed a placement with Larry June on Product of the Dope Game – “Peanut Butter Rag Top”, and later began working with artists such as Mr. Fab, Kamaiyah, Black C, and Big Sad
Inspired by what he learned in Los Angeles studios and driven by a desire to build something lasting, DJ Idea invested everything into building his own commercial recording facility. After saving over $100,000 from videography and creative work, he opened IDEA Studios in Honolulu, Hawaii, a multi-room professional studio now serving as a hub for artists and producers in the region
Beyond production, DJ Idea is also the founder of Sound Selection Kits, created to fill the gap for authentic West Coast drum kits and sound libraries at a time when the online industry was dominated by trap sounds. His deep belief in sound selection as the foundation of great music became the core philosophy behind the brand
He later developed Player VST, a lightweight, low-CPU virtual instrument inspired by classic sound modules like the Roland JV-1080, EMU Proteus, Korg Triton, Yamaha Motif, and other legendary hardware. Designed for speed and simplicity, Player VST allows producers to access authentic West Coast sounds without complex programming — reflecting DJ Idea’s belief that creativity should never be slowed down by technical barriers
Today, DJ Idea is at the forefront of West Coast music education, hosting live Player VST workshops where he teaches students how to create Bay Area mob and G-funk beats using real producer workflows. His teaching blends:
- Music production
- Cultural history
- Creative confidence
- Technology
- Career development
He works hands-on with students, mentors producers one-on-one, and aims to bring his workshops to schools, colleges, and youth programs nationwide.
DJ Idea’s story is one of:
- Cultural preservation
- Technical mastery
- Entrepreneurship
- Creative independence
- Giving back to the next generation
